Today, in an era of individualism, maybe it seems illogical to give the only thing you have for the sake of others; may be it seems strange to give the money or food in your hand to your friend while you badly need it for your temporary hunger.
On Martyrs Day, tomorrow, the Eritrean people will once again pay tribute to the thousands of portraits who sacrificed their lives for freedom and sovereignty of the nation. The Eritrean people remain committed as ever to honor the trust of the martyrs.
In Eritrea, sacrificing your life for others is part of the decades of struggle to achieve independence and safeguard the sovereignty. The sacrifice of Eritreans is unbelievable for many; even some freedom fighters do not believe what was done during the struggle for independence and safeguarding the nation.
Considering the freedom one is enjoying at present, it is clear that the people honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives.
Every year, the special commemoration of this day signifies our respect for our martyrs, who gave their lives so that our existence as a people and a sovereign nation can be ensured; and our pledge to defend and develop our country which was born through their sacrifices.
Although the government has always provided for the families and children of the martyrs, Eritreans had also been making their own contributions to this end. One of the examples could be the taking care of martyrs’ families by Eritreans residing in the Diaspora. This two years program was first initiated by the good will of Eritreans residing in the diasporas.
Families of the martyrs also do know the care being given by the government and the people of Eritrea. These families feel that they took pride in their beloved one’s martyrdom and take comfort in the fact their beloved ones had died for a noble cause.
Because of the blood of our martyrs, we have now freedom and life.
We will honor our martyrs trust only and only if we exert maximum efforts to develop the nation they sacrificed their lives for.
