Publishing books has shown steady progress in the last few years. In continuation of the efforts, a short stories’ book was inaugurated on the third of August 2008 at Expo. The 20 short stories, which were presented in the 2006 and 2007 Festival Eritrea’s short stories’ competition, cover different artistic, social, philosophical, patriotic… perspectives. The competition is arranged by the Cultural Affairs at the PFDJ.
During the inauguration ceremony Mr. Solomon Tsehaye, a member of the evaluating committee, said that comparing publication works to the other areas of literature, its progress has been limited due to financial problems of writers. So, the PFDJ Cultural Affairs should be recognized for providing the opportunity of publishing the collection of such short stories. The publication cost of the 181-page book was covered by the Hamset project of the Ministry of Health.
Although writers could not afford publishing a book individually, stated Mr. Solomon, they can solve the problem by working together, collecting their stories, and publish such a book by themselves. Mr. Solomon also stated that being great writer follows ups and downs; so, every writer should be energetic and optimistic in facing the challenges he faces.
One of the major advantages of such publication works is that it encourages young authors who have the skill but not financial capacity.
In this year’s, 2008, short stories competition, about 113 stories in six national languages were submitted to the organizing committee among which 18 stories were written by female writers. The top four stories, two ranked third, written in Nara and Tigre, won awards during the Eritrean Festival Closing Ceremony and the first 11 stories were nominated fit for publication.
According to the report of the organizing committee, the participation of female writers in the short stories competition has shown encouraging progress compared to the last years. One out of the published 20 short stories is written by a female.
The Cultural Affairs at the PFDJ also published a short stories book in 2005 that was funded by the Hamset Project.
