As it has become customary around this time each year, a sculpture exhibition prepared in connection with Martyrs’ Day was opened for public display here in the capital at the premises of the Ministry of Education.
The work of sculpture, which shows the resilience of Eritreans during colonization and the sacrifices they had to pay for their independence, was inaugurated on Wednesday June 17, 2009 by the Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom.
Entitled ‘Awet N Hafash’ (Victory to the Masses), the work of art portrays the life of political prisoners during colonization and their execution in general, and how they bravely stood up to their executioners amid the torture they were put through in particular. The prisoners bravely died shouting Awet N Hafash, a phrase which Ghidey Ghebremicahel, the artist who prepared the show, described as having a deep significance.
Ghidey has been preparing similar exhibitions for the last six years.
With its life-size model figures, the exhibition has been impressing passersby.
Meanwhile next to the sculpture exhibition, Mr. Solomon Berhane from the PFDJ Bureau of Cultural Affairs is projecting a documentary video on the theme to the public in a big screen.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until Martyrs’ Day.
