As part of the Eritrean Government’s responsibility to take care of the fallen martyrs families, over 1.6 Billion Nakfa has been disbursed in five years that span from 2004 up to 2009.
According to reports from the Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare, the Government issued proclamation 48 / 1994 and 137/ 2003 to assist family of the fallen martyrs, the latter proclamation being to those martyred in safeguarding Eritrea’s sovereignty and integrity.
The report further added that in 2004 over 203 million Nakfa, in 2005 approximately 392 million Nakfa has been paid. Also for the same cause, in 2006 over 333 million Nakfa, in 2007 approximately 321 million Nakfa and in 2008 approximately 352 million Nakfa has been disbursed. In the first quarter of 2009, the families of the fallen martyrs have received 63 million Nakfa.
The Eritreans in Diaspora also remit 720 US dollars in bi-annual basis and are assisting 7.906 destitute fallen families. As a result since 2004, 83 million Nakfa collected from the citizens are paid out to the families, the report further added.
Moreover, the PFDJ central region office initiated a project to look after the family of fallen martyrs. According to Mr. Khelifa Nurhusien, head of the organizational affairs at the office said 220 well-to-do citizens are looking after 215 families of fallen martyrs. The project’s sole objective is to assure the family of the fallen martyrs that their sacrifices was not in vain and involve citizens to voluntarily be part of the martyrs’ families lives for two years
Mr. Tesfai Weldemichael, who took the responsibility of 10 families for two years, says the martyrs left their families behind for a noble cause. And it’s every Eritrean responsibility to take care of them. “The right time for that noble initiative is now,” he added.
