An Eritrean artist in the Far East

Painting is an art that she inherited from her parents. She loved painting since she was young and her dream was to become a great painter—well trained and professional. Her dream came true when she received a scholarship to China. ‘Everything is about hard work; I plan something big and I hope to do it,’ Martha says. Shaebia Org interviewed her in Beijing. Meles Niguse is a well known poet in Eritrea. He has been able to win the hearts of many poetry lovers. Born in keren in 1975, Meles took university level literature courses. He is now working in the Eritrean Sport Commission, as a public relation officer. Recently, Meles published a poetry book entitled Zelo eyu Zhlu (he who exists lives). He has his say on literature in general, and on poetry in particular. We interviewed him in Asmara. Excerpts:

How would you describe yourself if people were to ask you tell your true identity?

I find this hard to answer because now, as ever before, I am still on the way to discover my true self. Sometimes, I have not stopped wondering if a glance at my quest could throw light on my identity.

Many Eritreans in the Diaspora have been making considerable contribution to rear families of fallen heroes, the disabled and the needy part of their society. Since the declaration of the fund raising for families of fallen heroes in 2004, therefore, a number of Eritreans from abroad responded positively and made a real difference in the lives of the families they shouldered responsibility for. The Eritrean community in England is one of the exemplary Eritrean societies abroad in this regard.
