Steam Engine Enthusiasts Are Flocking to Eritrean Railways

In continuation of its ever growing attraction to domestic and foreign tourists, the Eritrean Railway administration, in collaboration with Travel House International, Asmara-based tour agent co-hosted steam engine enthusiasts for a consecutive 11- day excursion last month. These engine enthusiasts, citizens of Australia, Canada, Sudan and nine European Union countries are mostly comprised of first time comers who visited the Eritrean railways being impressed with the coverage of various media about the unique steam engine experience in the country.

World Cup Trophy in Asmara

The iconic FIFA World Cup Trophy visited Asmara on 16 November 2009. The trophy onboard in a chartered plane with the sponsoring company’s name in it, landed at the tarmac of Asmara International Airport at 1:50 PM. Joining the entourage, 24 in total, were FIFA and the Coca-Cola Company delegations headed by Mr. Hedi Hemal representative of FIFA. At the scene, the entourage was greeted by ministers, army commanders, members of the sport community, invited guests and fans. The 18-carat solid-gold and malachite base trophy weighing 6.2kg had been flown from Sudan to Eritrea and later headed for Djibouti.

They are a husband and wife in their 70s. Mr. Hagos Keshi Drar and Mrs. Letay Kiflay are exemplary farmers who devotedly work in planting trees in their area, Azien. The couple have received a number of recognition certificates for the endless contribution they have been carrying out in protecting the environment. Once, they were recognized for the 65, 000 trees they planted in the name of our fallen heroes.

Senait Amine was born in 1985 in Dekemhare. Since her father joined the armed struggle while she was young, her mother took her and her younger sister to Sahel, the revolutionary base of the Eritrean armed struggle. Being young, although she couldn’t remember life in Sahel, she couldn’t forget the continuous Ethiopian planes’ bombardment of their houses.

The late Mr. Saleh Said Meki and his Great Strides in Eritrean Health sector

On mid afternoon of 6th October, mourners in their tens of thousands flocked to the Patriots Cemetry to pay their last respect to the martyred fighter Minister Saleh Said Meki. Government and PFDJ officials, commanders of the operation zones, religious leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and other dignitaries led by military parade accompanied the casket from his residence. Covered with National Flag, when reached in the cemetery vicinity, the casket was put in front of faithful for Salat Al Jinaza prayers headed by the Eritrean Mufti- Sheik Alamin Osman.

It is not often mentioned in history books that describe the Second World War. I don’t know why; but Keren played crucial role in world history—the city is located 91 kilometres north of Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea. During the early years of the Second World War, Eritrea was under the Italians and the Sudan under the British. It was in 1941 that British forces, following a deadly and final battle in Tinkuluhas, Keren, defeated the Italians. Eritreans, who were frustrated by the racist Italian colonial policy, played an important role in helping the British forces, believing that they would get back their fertile land and their human dignity.

Six contestants from each language were ready to give their persuasive ideas and facts on ‘Money or Love.’ Advantages and disadvantages of money; the reality and value of love were well presented.

The beautiful thing about taking a walk, on top of having some private time for wondering, talking with your inner self or maybe just singing your heart out and at the same time enjoying the clear and sometimes chilly evening air, is that you get to meet all kinds of people along the way.
