Eritreans continue to take the responsibility of supporting martyrs’ families

Many nationals from the Diaspora are continuing to boost their contribution to help the families of fallen heroes. In a meeting they conducted, marking the June 20, Martyrs’ Day, Eritreans in Perth, Australia, decided to financially help 22 families of martyred heroes for two years.

It is indubitable that we Eritreans dream of a developed and prosperous country that makes its nationals proud of it. Unlike some other countries, our independence was achieved after long and bitter war and the sacrifice of thousands of precious sons and daughters. Our ambition is to move forward fast by developing our creative thinking, nationalism and dedication (which has always existed in our culture) to develop our country.

In 1958, African peoples under French colonialism were given two options by the French government: complete independence and becoming autonomous members of the French Community under French domination. Surprisingly enough, all French colonies except Guinea opted for the latter. They decided to remain tied to France, the colonial power. From the moment I knew this history, I made efforts to fully understand the nature of living under alien subjugation. I tried to investigate whether French colonialism had elements of freedom.

Martyrs Day Officially Commemorated Today

The official celebration of Martyrs Day was commemorated today Saturday June 20, 2009, at the national level here in the Capital. The ceremony was conducted with a tribute that reflects the deepest respect for our martyrs at the Patriots’ Cemetery.
In the early morning hours of today, a public march which commenced around the Shida monument in the Martyrs Avenue and congregated around the Patriots’ Cemetery in Tsetserat.
