Martyrs Day Commemorated Today

Eritrean Martyrs Day commemorated throughout the nation today 20th June with a tribute that reflected the deepest respect for our martyrs and honor to all fallen Eritrean heroes and heroines.

A public parade led by President Isaias Afwerki was conducted in the early hours of today which commenced from Semaitat Avenue and was attended by a number of government officials, religious leaders, high-ranking military commanders, core diplomats and tens of thousands of citizens. The participants were escorted by a marching band which lastly congregated around the patriots cemetery in Tsetserat.

Upon reaching the patriots cemetery, President Isaias Afewerki, Head of Political Affairs at the PFDJ Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Defense Minister Sibhat Efriem, Chairwoman of NUEW Ms. Liul Gebreab and Administrator of Maekel Region Mr. Tewolde Kelati laid wreaths of flowers on martyrs graves.

In his speech Mr. Tewolde Kelati said that the endeavors which are being conducted indicate the people’s profound respect in martyrs’ trust.

During the commemoration ceremony, President Isaias Afewerki delivered a speech said June 20 is a day where all Eritreans renew their promises to the martyrs trust. He also said that everybody’s hard working to challenge today’s global problems is indubitable. (See full text).

Songs and poems that glorify the bravery of our martyrs were chanted and recited throughout the ceremony by Sadrb Cultural Group and other artists.

Although it is on 20th June every year that the nation formally remembers these dear sons and daughters of the land, the memory of our martyrs never fades from the hearts and minds of all Eritreans.

On Thursday evening, tens of thousand of Asmara residents marched along Martyrs and Liberation Avenues bearing lit candles in manifestation of the highest tribute to the martyrs.
