“Look how they exactly sculpted the features of Shelshel’s face. He was a brave and dedicated freedom fighter,” were the words of Sembetu Semere, an ex-freedom fighter. She was looking at the bust of her comrade, sculpted along that of other martyrs for an exhibition prepared by the Ministry of Defense in connection with the Eritrea Festival 2010.

NRSR Museum: A good Lesson for other Regions

There are only two museums in Eritrea; the National Museum of Eritrea in Asmara and the Northern Red Sea Regional Museum in Massawa. Comparing these museums to the history of the country, however, they are hardly sufficient. Considering the ancient, the medieval, colonial, the armed struggle, nation building etc experience of the country and its people, you would expect more museums—an important assignment for the future.

NME’s Booth at Festival Eritrea 2010 Impresses Visitors

The contents displayed at the booth of the National Museum of Eritrea (NME) in the Eritrean Festival 2010 in Expo Grounds are winning many visitors acclaims. The exhibition presents Eritrea’s major excavations including the 27 million-year-old elephant jaw bone and the million year-old Buya Lady locally refereed to as Hawa. The newly discovered fossil in Kudo Felasi, in Southern Region, which is a unique finding for most of the paleontological fossil excavations in Eritrea, carried out in areas where the Great Rift Valley crosses down, has also been presented in this year’s festival.

EIT and the College of Arts and Social Sciences Graduate 1785 Students

The Eritrean Institute of Technology and the College of Arts and Social Sciences in Mai-Nefhi (EIT) graduated a total of 1785 students in various fields in the morning hours of Thursday August 5, 2010.
The graduates include 429 students in degree and 1145 in diploma. Of the latter, 411 pursued their studies through the Open Distance Learning (ODL) program, 30 of them graduating in distinction. At the same time, the College of Arts and Social Sciences graduated 161 students in degree and 50 in diploma.

Aligdir dam: big works on plain land

Seeing is sometimes beyond believing when you see real big and important works by human beings despite challenging times. The newly built Aligdir dam is one of such an example. The dam, built in a plain, is expected to boost agricultural production in the country, thanks to the effort exerted by the Government in completing the construction of the dam in eleven months.

‘Mieras:’ a step in the long march

During the launching ceremony of ‘mieras,’ a book on the Tigre oral traditions, written by two different linguists— educator Musa Aron, a veteran, and Dessale Berekhet a young writer-- what the veteran writer stressed was that the oral tradition of the Tigre language was first written by Eritreans and not by European scholars as it has been said. Many scholars believe that the Tigre language of Eritrea was first written by western scholars. Different books, published by westerners describe that Tigre was written in Geez about 100 years ago by Europeans. “The saying is completely wrong,” educator Musa Aron said during the book launching ceremony.
