“Attending military training in Sawa opens an important and decisive chapter in the life of the youth,” said President Isaias Afewerki during the graduation ceremony of the 20th round of the national service that was celebrated on June 30 in Sawa.
President Isaias emphasized that Sawa is a bridge towards a better life and a means of challenging difficulties. “You are now capable to make a difference and face challenges,” he told the graduates.
Members of the 20th round attended military training and 12th grade academic training in the Warsay-Yekealo Secondary School and took the matriculation exams there. Those who pass the exam will join the Eritrean Institute of Technology and the rest will take vocational training in the centers establishe in different parts of the country.
Sawa has been a center of the Eritrean Defense Forces military training center since 1994 and trained thousands of youths. As part of making Sawa a professional training center, however, the Warsay-Yekealo Secondary School was established in 2003. The school provides service to students who completed their 11th grade in the secondary schools in the country.
“Although the plan of making Sawa a center of academic excellence started years ago, little has been accomplished so far. We are required to exert more effort to upgrade the quality of the schools here,” President Isaias said.
Speaking during the occasion Col. Debesay Ghide, Commander of the National Service Training Center said that Sawa is now providing dual services—military and academic training. “After completing their training students emerge energetic, disciplined, self-confident, and develop the love of work,” he said.
Different military parades were presented during the graduation ceremony. Ministers, military commanders, invited guests and parents of graduates were present during the occasion. The trainees took an oath to serve their country and keep the martyrs’ trust.
Outstanding trainees received prizes from president Isaias and other ministers.
